Specialty Contact Lenses at The Eye Doctors
A Variety of Offerings from Our Optician
Most wearers of contact lenses assume that they’ll simply order a pair of standard-issue (or maybe colored) lenses and think no more of the issue. Some patients, however, need or want specialty lenses that offer extra features, some of which you may never have heard of. Here at The Eye Doctors, we strive to provide a wide range of products that will serve our clientele as completely as possible. That’s why we want to make sure you know about some of the specialty lenses we offer. One of these options might make a world of difference in how you see the world — and how you feel about contacts!
Ortho-K – Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is a remarkable form of temporary vision correction for those who would prefer no lenses of any kind during the day. These lenses, meant to be worn only at night, actually reshape your cornea in a process called corneal refractive therapy. This reshaping process causes no discomfort thanks to the lenses’ gas-permeable design, which allows oxygen to reach the eye. Your reshaped corneas will provide up to 2 days of vision correction with no need for daytime glasses or contact lenses, just as if your eyes were naturally 20/20. Ortho-K is an attractive option for patients who have been told that, for whatever reason, they are not good candidates for LASIK vision correction.
Scleral – Scleral contacts are so named because they extend beyond the cornea all the way to the sclera, or white of the eye. This enables them to provide the entire lens area with a perfectly-shaped “cornea” that corrects the vision irregularities caused by the real cornea underneath. Some people who find ordinary soft contacts irritating to the eye due to dryness issues may prefer scleral lenses, because these lenses include a reservoir to hold tears in place, keeping the eyes hydrated. LASIK patients who find that they still need some sort of vision correction for their astigmatism often choose these lenses.
Hybrid – If you find it difficult to choose between the respective pros and cons of soft contacts versus hard contacts, hybrid lenses may be just what the optician ordered. Hard lenses are capable of providing clearer, sharper, more accurate vision correction than ordinary soft contact lenses, but many people have been willing to trade that extra accuracy for the comfort of soft lenses. Hybrid lenses solve this dispute by giving you the best of both worlds. A hard center is surrounded by a soft rim, providing both everyday comfort and top-quality vision correction.
