Correct your vision while you sleep —without the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses
The Eye Doctors in Havertown is proud to offer Ortho-K lenses (also known as “orthokeratology” or corneal refractive therapy). These specialty contact lenses are made to correct refractive errors (astigmatism, hyperopia and myopia) as you sleep by temporarily reshaping the cornea with gas permeable contact lenses.
These lenses serve as an alternative to traditional contact lenses or glasses as they are not worn while awake. Ortho-K works to correct vision overnight and is best for those who have less than -6.00 diopters of nearsightedness (myopia), with or without astigmatism.
How Does Ortho-K Work?
Approved by the FDA in 2002, Ortho-K contact lenses generate hydrostatic pressure within the tear film separating your eye from the lens. This allows surface cells composing the corneal epithelium to redistribute naturally, thereby altering the surface shape of your cornea. In addition, these subtle, cellular changes not only improve the focusing ability of your cornea for up to 48 to 72 hours but may also prevent or delay worsening of myopia and/or astigmatism. Recent advances in orthokeratology may also help people with presbyopia (those who only require reading glasses).
Are the Effects of Ortho-K Permanent?
No. If you discontinue wearing your Ortho-K lenses at night, your vision returns to its previous state within 72 hours. However, after only one night of resuming your Ortho-K treatment, your corneal cells will once again redistribute and your improved vision will be temporarily restored.
Is Ortho-K Designed to Treat All Vision Problems?
Ortho-K is approved for people of all ages with low to moderate degrees of refractive errors. However, since each person’s visual and physiology needs are different, you will need to consult with Dr. Toyzer before electing to move forward with Ortho-K treatment. After you have a complete eye examination and possibly a corneal mapping procedure (corneal topography), we will proceed with customizing your Ortho-K lenses using CAD/CAM technology.
