Hybrid Lenses (Synergeyes)
Do you have keratoconus, nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism? At The Eye Doctors, we offer a wide variety of specialty lenses, including hybrid contact lenses.
These specialty lenses give patients the best of both worlds: the visual acuity of a rigid gas permeable (RGP) lens with the comfort of a soft contact lens. Hybrid contact lenses are specialty lenses that are suited for patients with keratoconus and other irregular corneas conditions.
What are Hybrid Contact Lenses?
They are large-diameter lenses with a rigid gas permeable (GP) zone and a soft silicone hydrogel material. Its combination design is engineered to provide visual clarity and comfort just like soft lenses.
Who Can Benefit from Hybrid Lenses?
Hybrid contact lenses correct a wide variety of vision problems, including
- Myopia (nearsightedness)
- Hyperopia (farsightedness)
Hybrid Lenses for Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a degenerative eye disease that causes the cornea to thin and bulge, creating a cone-shaped look, which can result in visual impairment. Because of the cornea’s unusual shape, soft contact lenses often cannot fully correct vision to an acceptable level. Keratoconus affects both eyes in over 90 percent of cases. With hybrid contact lenses, the rigidity of a GP lens helps to smooth out the front surface of the eye and improve vision.
Hybrid Lenses for Astigmatism
Hybrid contact lenses are also a good choice for those with astigmatism. Its GP lens masks just about all of the corneal astigmatism. Hybrid lenses are created from exact karatometry values and deliver both crisp, high-definition vison and exceptional comfort with its soft skirt that surrounds the center. Vision is never blurry or out of focus. There are also hybrid multifocal designs to choose from.
Hybrid contact lenses work well for both patients with regular corneal astigmatism and presbyopic patients with astigmatism. With advances in contact lens technology, those with abnormal corneas, high myopia and astigmatism no longer have to wear rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses in order to see clearly. RGP lenses are irritable in nature, and soft contact lenses for astigmatism are susceptible to excessive rotation and cause blurry vision.
