Dry Eyes Q & A

What are the symptoms of dry eyes?

Each person with dry eyes experiences the condition differently. Your symptoms might be minor or severe, and they can worsen depending on the weather or environmental conditions.

Some common symptoms of dry eyes include:

  • Pain
  • Blurry vision
  • A gritty feeling in the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Excess tears

It might also feel like there is a foreign object in your eye, or you might have difficulty wearing contact lenses.

What causes dry eyes?

Imbalances in the tear system are the main cause of dry eyes. But there are other causes, including:

    • Aging: dry eyes are more common if you’re over 65 or if you’re going through menopause
    • Medication: side effects from antihistamines, decongestants, blood pressure drugs, or other medications
    • Diseases: such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, or thyroid issues
    • Eyelid structural problems: these can affect tear production and eye lubrication

Dry eyes is a condition more common among women, contact lens wearers, and people who spend a significant amount of time in front of a computer. You also may be more likely to develop dry eyes if you've had LASIK surgery or other eye procedures.

How are dry eyes treated?

At The Eye Doctors, Dr. Toyzer examines and tests your eyes to confirm dry eyes. Next, he determines what’s causing your dry eyes.

Your dry eyes might get better with artificial tear eye drops, ointments with polyvinyl alcohol, or other medications.

Dr. Toyzer also offers a procedure called LipiFlow, which has been effective for many men and women with dry eyes — some have even reported 100% improvement. Dr. Toyzer opens and clears blocked glands so they can produce oils needed for healthy tears.

In addition to these methods, Dr. Toyzer might recommend changes in your eye care habits and new glasses or contacts.

With the right treatment, it’s easy to resolve dry eyes and have comfortable, clear vision again. To get started, call The Eye Doctors or use the one-click scheduling tool to book your appointment online.
